You are invited to join our monthly Spiritual Gathering on the last Friday of every month. The Spiritual Care Team plans to engage with the CORE VALUES (sometimes referred to as the "Grandfather Teachings") for the remainder of the year - one each of the next seven months followed by implementing them into the Coalition's engagement in organizing. We will also often refer to Kaitlin Curtice's book, Living Resistance: An Indigenous Vision of Seeking Wholeness Every Day.

|
|
These Spiritual Gatherings are based upon principles of decolonization so that we are able to take what we are learning back into our diverse faith communities as we seek to change the ways in which we relate to our Mother Earth and the world that continues to oppress Indigenous Peoples today. Once you have registered, save the link into your calendar -- we will use the same link each month.

Making Connections: Goshen College Student Reflection |
A reflection from Goshen College student Caroline Lamb ('26) on her 'Transforming Conflict and Violence' class taught by Scholar-Activist Alicia Maldonado-Zahra:
"The most important aspect of this course by far to me personally was learning how decolonization works. As an environmental science major, I am familiar with the injustices done to animal species, or the scientific processes behind the nitrogen cycle, but I was less familiar with how these issues connect back to human health, safety, and justice until I took this class.
When we started by learning about the residential schools for Native Americans this helped me to understand how indigenous knowledge has disappeared in the U.S.. European settlers came to this country, and used the doctrine of discovery to justify the murdering and silencing of the indigenous people already living and thriving here. I could identify how historically as we have strayed further and further from indigenous knowledge of the land, we also have strayed further from a healthy environment that provides for us in return.
Learning about how decolonization gives indigenous wisdom a seat at the table to make decisions for our future made me feel hopeful that we can apply this. I intend on taking this approach into my future career." |
