One of our Indigenous community partners, the Apache Stronghold, are taking their religious freedom case for Oak Flat to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in Pasadena this month, where they will be joined in solidarity by people of all faith backgrounds (many reps from our Repair Network will be there in person!). On March 21st, they will argue that allowing the destruction of Oak Flat by a copper mining company is a violation of their right to religious freedom (see this short video for more info).
Can you join us in prayer on Sunday the 19th, and/or on the 20th and 21st before their court hearing?
Prayer during worship on the 19th: The 19th will be a focused day of prayer for the Apache Stronghold. Can you adapt and share this sample bulletin announcement today with your faith community newsletters/ bulletin announcements?
See this folder for example prayers, liturgies, and sermons from the Coalition for worship leaders and pastors to use in worship. Please share your written prayers with us as well!
Prayer as movement on the 20th/ 21st: See below for an invitation to walk/ run your prayers at sunset on March 20th and sunrise on March 21st.
Take photos of your prayer actions!
As a visual expression of prayer on the 19th-21st, please ask people to lift up signs of support for Apache Stronghold that include the hashtag #saveoakflat and take photos to share with us! You can email them to Michaela at michaela@dismantlediscovery.org so we can share them as encouragement with Apache Stronghold and spread the word on social media about their case!
Apache leaders call us to “One Drum, One Prayer, One Circle.” May we unite with them in protection of Earth and in resistance to ongoing colonization.
