Maya-Mennonite Solidarity Share Back |
The Maya-Mennonite Solidarity Working Group will be hosting a share back about our recent delegation to Maya ancestral territory, Monday, Jan. 29 from 7-8pm CT (5-6pm PT / 8-9pm ET). After 5 years of partnership, members of our working group spent about a month in Campeche, Mexico, listening to and learning from members of Colectivo In Laak Le Ixiimó (CILLI), a collective of native seed guardians, as well as Mennonite farming families who have settled nearby.
Join us for a conversation about what we're learning, where the work is going from here, and how you can be involved. (Seed parties, anyone?) Find more information and sign up for the 1/29 Zoom conversation here. |

Suriname Indigenous Health Fund Confronting Institutional Oppression |
For 20 years, SIHF has systematically addressed the social determinants responsible for the death, disease, disability and suicide that occurs among Indigenous populations being displaced by international investment in regions rich in natural resources. SIHF dedicated itself to the search for a solution to an example of this injustice by focusing on a population health crisis affecting the people in the Wayana Language Territory (WLT) between Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil. SIHF assumed the lessons learned in the WLT would serve as a case study that would apply elsewhere in the world.
In the beginning we benefited from our anonymity and were disregarded as insignificant. Over time, our dedication to the Wayana people project and our efforts to equip them with the tools to participate in the research they needed to advocate for themselves has, over time, led to sanctions by government officials at the national and international and supranational level who believe that these activities are the sole domain of government sanctioned experts. This bulletin communicates the latest encounter with censorship and SIHF's efforts to use socially, morally, ethically and technically feasible methods to circumvent and overcome health justice obstacles. I welcome your comments, questions, and suggestions.

Also: Learn about SIHF's new app launch "Victim's Voice" in partnership with Engage by Cell (a mobile service provider). The app allows individuals to self-submit health issues (such as mercury poisoning, trafficking, malnutrition, and mental health concerns) through their personal phones. This data is then collected and made public to attract attention from international entities such as the World Bank, United Nations, World Health Organization, the governments of Suriname, France, and Brazil, and many others. Dr. Daniel Peplow, Co-Director of SIHFund says, "Access to cell phone technology has been the single most influential factor facilitating indigenous people's ability to advocate for their rights."

The Land is Not Our Own: Seeking Repair Alongside Indigenous Communities
|
|
|
|
In 2023 the Coalition partnered with Just Faith Ministries to release a new, self-guided curriculum on Indigenous justice.
The intention behind the partnership was to develop an educational tool that Coalition and Repair Network members could use to inspire, mobilize, and equip their own churches or networks to dismantle the Doctrine of Discovery.
